Mercurial Vapors

Mercurial Vapors were released in 2002 just before the World Cup, and they came to the market as the lightest boot available with several shiny new key innovations. Its upper was made of an very thin, lightweight synthetic known as Nike Skin. The claim being that it was thinner and stronger than any kangaroo leather. Mercurial Vapors also featured an external heel counter which was very rare at that time as well as a “glass” filled outsole named NikeFrame, inspired by athletic sprinting spikes and designed to spring back into shape after push-off. The original marketing blurb claimed the shoe showed a 3% decrease in the time to cover a 20 metres compared to traditional boots. So you can actually run faster in these apparently.

The first time the boots were seen outside of Nike was in the ‘Cage advert ‘ with Cantona, Roberto Carlos and Thierry Henry, in which a close-up image of the boots is taken near the end of the advertisement.

The first release saw the introduction of just 3 colour variations followed by another just after the World Cup which was worn by Ronaldo in the semi final and Final.   Several more colours quickly followed as the boot gained popularity.

Mercurial Vapors have progressed through from the original design in 2002 to design Mercurcial Vapor V now.   The have been worn by some of the worlds top players and continue in that vain with players like Cristano Ronaldo , Aaron Lennon and Luis Fabiano doing them proud.

Mercurial Vapors II

Mercurial Vapors II were launched in early 2004 in the two simple colours of photo blue and team red. The first player to wear the blue boots was Ronaldo at the Nou Camp for Real Madrid against Barcelona. The red were released for the first time on a two goal scoring debut  by Thierry Henry in Arsenals greatest away victory 5 1 over Inter Milan in the San Siro.

This upgraded version had a very slightly thicker material upper and a cushioned area around the ankle.  The cosmetic patterns on the outside were changed slightly too with more pronounced identations and a narrow contrast stripe to accentuate the vivid colours.   The basics of the boots remained the same. However there was another big batch of colour variations released in this version including a kangaroo leather version in black /white and an a Real Madrid colourway worn by Ronaldo of alminium and gold.  There are not many Mercurial Vapors II around now but there are still some at Amazon at less than half original price.

There is currently a  Sale of Nike Football Boots hidden away on a rugby site with soft ground Mercurial Vapors from as little as £69.99 amongst other Nike bargains
